Gilliland has competed for TRG Motorsports this year, driving the #71 Chevrolet, but on Thursday team officials announced that Bobby Labonte would take over that car at Atlanta and another six races.
Earlier this week, Labonte learned he would not be driving his usual entry at Atlanta as Roush Fenway protege Erik Darnell signed a seven-race deal to drive the #96 Ford that Labonte has been racing this year.
Gilliland has now been entered to drive for Wood Brothers this weekend, replacing former Cup champion Bill Elliot, who has been experiencing some back problems according to the team.
"Given the modified practice schedule where the practices and qualifying are all being done on Saturday, we didn't feel there was enough time to make changes to the seat if Bill wasn't comfortable and we needed to get another driver," said team co-owner Eddie Wood.
"We called David to see if he was available. Thankfully he was and agreed to help."
According to reports, Gilliland is also in the frame to drive a fourth car for Joe Gibbs Racing in three of the final 10 races.
